Most tourists who arrive in Southeast Asia tend to visit the same popular beaches. However, there are many Thai islands that are still relatively untouched, where the sense of paradise is palpable.
Koh Kood is one of these hidden gems—a destination where you won’t find international brands and where the roads are nearly deserted. The main thing to consider is how to get from Bangkok to Koh Kood, as the capital is the most convenient starting point for your journey to this island.
Koh Kood is part of the Koh Chang archipelago in Trat Province, although it is significantly farther away than the main island in the area. The distance between Bangkok and the pier that connects to Koh Kood is about 350 kilometers, so the most common travel option is a combination of road and ferry transport.
For convenience, cost-effectiveness, and reducing your carbon footprint, the best way to travel from Bangkok to Koh Kood is to purchase a combined bus and boat ticket. The price is roughly the same as buying both tickets separately, but it offers the added benefit of a direct route. Note that the pier for Koh Kood is quite far from Trat’s main town.
The road trip from Bangkok to the pier takes just over five hours, followed by a ferry ride to Koh Kood, which usually takes another couple of hours. Combined tickets typically depart from the Khaosan district or the airport and cost around 30 euros. You can book the journey through 12GoAsia.
If you prefer to travel independently, you can take a bus from Mochit Bus Station in Bangkok to Trat, and then catch another bus to the pier before boarding the ferry. Keep in mind, though, that there are only a limited number of ferries available each day.
Although Koh Kood does not have an airport, you can shorten your journey slightly by flying from Bangkok to Trat. In that case, you might save around two hours, but the cost is significantly higher. Trat Airport is one of the most expensive in Thailand, along with Koh Samui. Traveling the 300 kilometers between Bangkok and Trat costs over a hundred euros per trip with Bangkok Airways.
From Trat Airport, it is easy to catch a bus to the pier and then take a boat to Koh Kood. However, due to the high cost and minimal time saved, we believe that the most reasonable way to get from Bangkok to Koh Kood is to combine road and sea travel.
