Are you planning a visit to Bali soon? Or perhaps Lombok, or another one of Indonesia’s many islands? If you like staying connected to the internet, take note. We’re going to explain how to get a SIM card with internet access in Indonesia so you can stay always connected.
In this island-rich country, you’ll find Wi-Fi almost everywhere. However, given the cost of data plans, you’ll likely end up choosing either a local SIM card or or the eSIM Indonesia from Holafly with unlimited data. Here’s everything you need to know. Let’s dive in!
We used to recommend local SIM cards in your destination country as they were more affordable compared to physical SIM cards you could buy online. However, eSIMs have become very appealing.
The key reason for this shift is that eSIMs now offer unlimited data (though not yet available in all destinations, but coming soon to Indonesia), making this option much more attractive and a more justified price.
With the Indonesia eSIM, you don’t need a physical SIM card for internet access. Instead, you install a virtual card on your phone for unlimited internet. Purchase the eSIM, set up your phone automatically, and as soon as you arrive, your smartphone will connect to the internet network.
Starting today, you can get a discount on your Holafly international Indonesia eSIM with unlimited data. The link above provides general information about Holafly, but the button below will take you directly to the discount for your eSIM purchase.
NOTE: If the discount doesn’t apply automatically (which is very rare), use this discount code: CONMOCHILA
In Indonesia, six telecom companies offer various voice and data services: Telkomsel, IM3 Ooredoo (also known as Indosat), 3 (Tri), XL Axiata, Smartfren, and Bolt (the last two offer only 4G/LTE).
Telkomsel, the largest company in the country, also offers the best coverage with 98% of the territory covered, so we chose this for our SIM card purchase.
We researched online and discovered that Telkomsel offers a prepaid SIM card called simPATI with different data packages. You can find these at the airport upon arrival in Indonesia or at various local stores.
You can buy a Telkomsel SIM card at Denpasar Airport (if you’re entering the country through Bali) or at other major international airports in Indonesia.
In our case, the price offered at the airport seemed excessive (400,000 Indonesian rupiah for 10GB and only 15 days of validity), so we decided to purchase it directly in Kuta, our first stop in Bali.
Once at the hotel with Wi-Fi access, we searched for the nearest Telkomsel store on Google Maps. After a 15-minute walk, we reached a small shopping mall (Mall Bali Galeria) where a Telkomsel office called Grapari was located.
After waiting 5 minutes for our turn, a friendly staff member helped us with the registration using our passport. We paid 200,000 rupiah plus 10,000 for the card and received a SIM with 6GB of data for 30 days. If you need different data packages, you can find options with varying durations and data amounts.
