Although it used to be common to get a SIM card for Japan when you arrived in the country, the introduction of eSIMs has changed this trend.

Is it easy to find Wi-Fi in restaurants and hotels? Yes, but it’s also true that everyone is accustomed to being constantly connected, which is why many consider buying a Japan eSIM. We’ll cover everything you need to know. Let’s go!

Holafly Japan eSIM or Local SIM Card?

Until recently, we always recommended using a local SIM card in your destination country, as it was more economical than the physical SIM cards available on certain websites. However, nowadays, the Holafly Japan eSIM is very appealing.

The key reason for this shift is that eSIMs now offer unlimited data (though not yet available in all destinations), making this option much more attractive and a more justified price.

With the Japan eSIM, you don’t need a physical SIM card for internet; instead, you install a virtual SIM on your phone for unlimited internet access. You make the purchase, automatically configure your phone, and as soon as you arrive at your destination, your smartphone will connect to the internet.

You can now get a discount on your Holafly Japan eSIM with unlimited data. The link above provides all the general information about Holafly, but the button here will take you directly to the discount for your eSIM purchase.

NOTE: If for any reason the discount doesn’t apply automatically (which is very rare), you can use this discount code: CONMOCHILA

IIJmio Japan Travel Local SIM

Japan has many companies offering various services and data plans, but they all use the same 3G or 4G/LTE networks of the three major operators: NTT DoCoMo, SoftBank, and au. This means that the speed and functionality of any card you buy will be roughly the same, with differences mainly in price and data volume.

After researching the features of all the cards offered to tourists, and before Japan eSIM cards became so popular, we chose the IIJmio JAPAN TRAVEL SIM. We’ll explain why further below.

Where to Buy a SIM Card in Japan

You can get SIM cards in Japan from many places, such as the arrival airports in Tokyo or Osaka (where we entered the country). There are so many vending machines across Japan that you can buy a SIM card as easily as a soda. You don’t need a passport; just buy the card, activate it, and start browsing.

Another place to buy SIM cards in Japan is in electronics stores like BIG CAMERA, which is where we chose to get ours. You’ll find these stores in various cities, so it’s not difficult to locate them.

Which Card to Choose? Some Tips

With so many companies and offers, it’s normal to feel confused at first and not know which one to choose. Here are some tips to make it easier for you to decide. First, ask yourself the million-dollar question: How long will you be traveling in Japan?

Depending on the number of days or weeks you’ll be in Japan, you’ll need to pick a card accordingly, as most companies offer cards for 7, 14, 21, or 30/60 days.

Many of these cards can be recharged with more data, but sometimes it’s more cost-effective to buy a new card rather than recharge. This will depend on the card you choose. In our case, since our trip to Japan is over 30 days, we opted for the IIJmio JAPAN Travel SIM for 3 months due to its quantity and price.

Free Wi-Fi in Japan

One thing that caught our attention when we arrived at Osaka International Airport was a table with a couple of young people offering free Wi-Fi across Japan with just an app installation on your phone. Since nobody dislikes a freebie, we agreed to have it installed.

While it can be handy in an emergency, after 30 days in the country, we’ve used it only a few times, and it doesn’t work as well as it initially seemed. Additionally, it sends you advertising messages while you’re connected. It’s better to opt for the Japan eSIM, which is much more effective.
