How to Get a Thai Visa in Kuala Lumpur

One of the easiest and quickest places to get a visa for Thailand—often issued from one day to the next—is, without a doubt, the Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur. While the process itself is fast, you must have all your paperwork in perfect order, as this embassy has been the most demanding when it comes to issuing the 60-day tourist visa.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get your Thai visa in Kuala Lumpur, in case you’re in Malaysia and decide to do it the same way we did.

Step 1. The Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur

If you’re staying in Chinatown, a popular area for travelers, you can walk about 5–10 minutes to reach the Metrobus No. 79 stop, which will drop you off right in front of the embassy for just RM1.5. You can also take the U30 or U32 buses, but we took the 79. At the end of this article, you’ll find a Google Map showing the embassy’s location.

Step 2. Requirements

Here are the documents and requirements you’ll need; some may seem a bit unusual:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 more months
  • One passport-size photo
  • The application form (you’ll be handed this at the entrance, so no need to print it in advance)
  • Proof of transportation out of Malaysia—yes, you heard that right. I was caught off guard and had to book a train from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok on my phone via Easybook. If you don’t bring a printed copy, there’s a hotel with several shops right across from the embassy, including a pharmacy that charges RM9 (!!) per page for printing—so it’s best to come prepared.
  • Hotel reservation in Thailand. They now ask where you’ll be staying upon arrival. Since I was entering through Hat Yai, I booked a night at Cathay Guesthouse—where I’m currently writing this article.
  • Proof of onward travel out of Thailand. This one is quite common now and required at many embassies.
  • RM 110 in visa fees

Once you have all your documents, you’ll get a number and wait to be called. The embassy doesn’t usually get too crowded, and you’re often called within 30 minutes.

Step 3. Collecting Your Passport

Once you’ve completed all the paperwork, they’ll give you a receipt to come back the next afternoon. On a side note, I actually lost my receipt (or accidentally threw it away) but still had no issues collecting my passport. 😉
