Koh Lipe, one of the most spectacular islands in the Andaman Sea, is located in the south of Thailand, almost on the border with Malaysia. Its crystal-clear waters and white sandy beaches attract many tourists from Bangkok and other parts of the country.
If you’re planning a visit to this island, the following guide on how to get from Bangkok to Koh Lipe step by step in an easy and efficient way will be very helpful for you.
Step 1: The quickest way to get to Koh Lipe from Bangkok is by plane. The first thing you should do is find a flight to Hat Yai, which is the closest airport to Koh Lipe.
The flight usually takes less than an hour and a half, with multiple departures available throughout the day.
Step 2: Once you arrive at Hat Yai Airport, you will need to take a minivan that goes to Pak Bara, the small port where speedboats to Koh Lipe depart.
Don’t worry about arranging separate tickets, as many companies offer combined transport for both the minivan and the boat. The journey usually takes between 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on your departure time.
Step 1: Another way to get to Koh Lipe from Bangkok is by bus, which takes approximately 14 to 17 hours to reach Hat Yai. You can check prices, schedules, and purchase tickets in advance here.
Step 2: From the Hat Yai bus station, you’ll need to take a minivan that will take you to Pak Bara, the port where the speedboats to Koh Lipe depart. This journey usually lasts between 4.5 to 5.5 hours, depending on the company you choose and the time of day.
Another way to reach Koh Lipe from Bangkok is by train, which we tried on our first visit. This option involves a combination of train, minivan, and speedboat, making it one of the most cost-effective choices, though not the fastest.
Step 1: Take the overnight train from Bangkok to Hat Yai. This is a comfortable option that allows you to travel overnight and arrive rested.
Step 2: From the Hat Yai train station, take a minivan to Pak Bara, the port where speedboats to Koh Lipe depart.
Step 4: Once you arrive, there is a 20 THB fee for using the platform, followed by a short ride on a long-tail boat to the island, which costs an additional 50 THB.
If you prefer to take a motorbike taxi from the beach to your accommodation, expect to pay around 100 THB, although walking is also an option if you don’t have much luggage.
