Koh Maak, the Quiet, Undeveloped Thai Island

It’s hard to choose the best islands in Thailand, as the decision is very personal—what’s essential for some may not be for others. However, if we were to mention the quietest island that still has a minimum level of tourism, it would probably be Koh Maak, the smallest of the Koh Chang archipelago.

For a while, there was a myth that Koh Maak was the most beautiful island in Thailand, but that was mainly because it was hard to reach, and its tourist industry was minimal. It was relatively unknown at that time. Today, it’s a little more popular, but not by much.

While it may be an exaggeration to call it the most beautiful island in Thailand, the truth is that its beaches are truly exceptional.

Comparisons may be unpleasant but are necessary in the case of Koh Maak, as it is located next to Koh Kood, which is a bit larger and offers more activities. Additionally, Koh Kood is undoubtedly more popular and attracts a greater number of travelers.

What we perhaps like most about Koh Maak is that the island has consciously kept itself away from the crowds. There are limits on the number of rental motorbikes, a ban on foreign-owned businesses, and strict rules against littering.

Waste is managed by a group of local families who recycle bottles and plastics as part of a formal plan to preserve the island’s ecosystem, with the goal of being waste-free in a few decades.

If your criteria for the quietest beach destination in Thailand include beautiful waters and minimal tourism infrastructure, Koh Maak might be the answer. There isn’t much to do apart from relaxing on the beach and enjoying the sea. There are no bars or supermarkets, and choosing the right hotel is important, as transportation can sometimes be a bit tricky.

Until recently, there were no motorbikes available for rent on the island, so picking the wrong hotel could leave you somewhat stranded. While transportation is now easier, the roads on Koh Maak remain challenging.

The beaches on Koh Maak are stunning, some of the best in the country. If your plan is to spend a few quiet days with a partner, this might be the perfect option.

When to Visit Koh Maak

Koh Maak is part of the Koh Chang archipelago, located near Cambodia, and its climate is similar to the Thai islands in the Andaman Sea. The best time to visit is from mid-November to late February, when temperatures are pleasant, and there’s plenty of sunshine.

From February to May, it can get quite hot, but rain is rare. The challenge comes between June and October, when the skies may be cloudy and rain frequent.

Personally, we always say that Thai beaches are wonderful even during the monsoon season, as the low season means fewer crowds and lower prices. However, in Koh Maak’s case, if it rains, you may find yourself without much to do since the beach and sea are the main attractions.

During the rainy season, an island like Koh Chang, with its size and variety of options, might be a better choice. But if you’re set on visiting Koh Maak and can only go in July or August, don’t miss the opportunity—just be prepared to keep your plans flexible in case of heavy rain.

How to Get There

To reach Koh Maak, you must travel by sea from Laem Ngop pier. However, this location is quite remote. The quickest way to get there is by flying to Trat airport, especially if you are not in the capital. From there, you can take a taxi to the port.

From Bangkok, it is also possible to travel by road to the pier. Buses depart from Ekkamai station starting at 7:30 a.m. and take around five hours to reach Trat, where you can take a local taxi to the boat. The bus fare ranges between 100 and 300 baht, and you can purchase the ticket through 12GoAsia.

To reach the island from Laem Ngop, you have both fast and regular options. The speedboat takes 45 minutes and costs around 800 to 1,000 baht for a round trip, while the ferry takes up to three hours and costs 250 baht per trip.

What to See in Koh Maak

Ao Kao Beach

This is Koh Maak’s main beach, a quiet paradise stretching for several kilometers. It’s where you’ll find most of the island’s restaurants, though don’t expect too many. The best part is that you can walk to any spot, and it’s known for having the whitest sand on the entire island.

We also recommend staying in Ao Kao, as it’s the most convenient area on Koh Maak. Even though it’s the central spot, most of the beach will likely be completely empty during your visit.

Ao Soun Yai

This is a more remote beach, centered around the island’s most luxurious and exclusive resorts. It’s equally beautiful, though perhaps not as striking as Ao Kao. This part of the island is perfect for those wanting to spend their days in a resort with a private beach.

Koh Kham Excursion

On Koh Maak, you can take boat tours to see coral reefs and go snorkeling. One of the most unique tours is a visit to the small island of Koh Kham, undoubtedly one of the most visually stunning paradises with its white sands and turquoise waters.

Koh Kham is off the beaten path, except for those coming from Koh Maak. Part of its charm lies in the black volcanic rocks, giving the island a very special appearance. It also boasts a stunning stretch of sea.

In addition to taking a boat, you can reach Koh Kham by kayak, as the islands are very close to each other.

What to Eat and Where to Stay

As we’ve mentioned earlier, getting around Koh Maak isn’t as easy as on other islands, so finding good accommodation is key, especially since your time here will be mainly for relaxation.

In the mid-range, Baan Koh Maak is a hotel that offers a great location with bungalows and comfortable rooms for around 30 euros. For those willing to spend around 100 euros, Seavana is an option located on a more private beach, offering all the amenities of a resort.

The food on your trip to Koh Maak is sure to be delicious. While there are plenty of restaurants, Koh Maak Seafood is a local favorite. Not only is it affordable with incredibly fresh produce, but the location is ideal, and they can even pick you up at your hotel in a van.
