As we always say, it’s easy to find Wi-Fi in restaurants and hotels today, but with data rates being what they are, you’ll probably end up getting either a local SIM or the Holafly Laos eSIM. Let’s dive into the details!

Holafly Laos eSIM or Local SIM?

We used to always advocate for using a local SIM in Laos, as it was more economical than physical SIM cards available on some websites. However, nowadays, the eSIM option seems very appealing.

The key reason for this shift is that eSIMs now offer unlimited data (though not yet available in all destinations), making this option much more attractive and a more justified price.

With the Laos eSIM, you don’t need a physical SIM card to access the internet. Instead, you install a virtual card on your phone for seamless connectivity. You make the purchase, automatically configure your phone, and as soon as you arrive at your destination, your smartphone will connect to the internet.

Starting today, you can get a Holafly discount code on your Laos eSIM and save some money. The previous link provides general information about Holafly, but the button below will take you directly to the discount for your eSIM card purchase.

NOTE: If, for any reason, the discount isn’t applied automatically (which is very rare) you can use this discount code: CONMOCHILA.

Local SIM in Laos

Laos has four mobile operators: Unitel, Laotel, Beeline, and ETL. We opted for Unitel because it seems to be the largest and has the best coverage in 3G and 4G, though we’ll provide more details as we go along…

Where to Get a SIM Card in Laos?

We entered Laos from Thailand, specifically through Huay Xai, a small town across the Mekong River that serves as an entry point for many tourists.

If you’re entering Laos here as well, just walk up from the river and turn left to find the store where we got our SIM card (Data-only SIM). It should be less than 500 meters from the small dock.

In this store, you can choose the internet SIM card you want, not just from Unitel, in case you’re considering another provider.
