In many cities in Nepal, as well as in hotels and restaurants, you can find free Wi-Fi, though not in the mountains if you’re trekking. But let’s get to the point. There’s something interesting to tell you.

Holafly Nepal eSIM or Local SIM?

We used to always recommend using a local SIM in Nepal, which was more economical than the physical SIM cards available on certain websites. However, nowadays, the eSIM option is quite appealing.

The key reason for this shift is that eSIMs now offer unlimited data (though not yet available in all destinations), making this option much more attractive and a more justified price.

With the Nepal eSIM, you don’t need a physical SIM card for internet access; instead, you install a virtual card on your phone for seamless connectivity. You make the purchase, automatically configure your phone, and as soon as you arrive at your destination, your smartphone will connect to the internet.

Starting today, you can get a Holafly discount code on your Nepal eSIM. The previous link provides general information about Holafly, but the button below will take you directly to the discount for your eSIM card purchase.

NOTE: If, for any reason, the discount isn’t applied automatically (which is very rare) you can use this discount code: CONMOCHILA.

Local SIM in Nepal

Getting a SIM card with internet in Nepal for international calls or simply staying connected is an easy task that will only take a few minutes.

You have two companies to choose from: Ncell and Nepal Telecom, with Ncell being the one we chose for its tourist-friendly acquisition. Note that we’re talking about prepaid SIM cards.

First, find any store with an Ncell sign on its door. If you’re in Kathmandu, don’t worry, you’ll find plenty, either in Thamel, where many backpackers gather, or on the way to Durbar Square. If your smartphone uses a microSIM, don’t worry, these are available as well.

Requirements to Obtain a SIM Card with Internet in Nepal:

  • A passport-sized photo
  • Your passport (for them to make a copy)
  • A form to fill out in the store
  • Around 100 rupees for the card

Once activated, you can top it up with any amount you like to choose a data package. We’ve included a link to Ncell’s rates so you can get an idea.

Also, if you’re trekking in the Annapurna Circuit or elsewhere, the company with the best coverage is Nepal Telecom. Our Ncell card lost connectivity for several days, just when we started gaining altitude.

The speed in major cities like Kathmandu or Pokhara is generally quite good; however, speeds in other areas tend to be slower.
