Local SIM in Peru

In Peru, four telecom companies offer various voice and data services: Movistar Peru (from Telefónica), Claro Peru (from América Móvil), Entel Peru (Nextel), and Bitel (from Viettel).

Movistar Peru is the largest company in the country and offers the best coverage, but it’s also the most expensive, so we ruled it out first.

After some research, we found that, Claro Perú, the second-largest company, offers much more competitive prices and nearly similar coverage, so we decided to go for a prepaid SIM card with a data package.

Where to Get a SIM Card in Peru?

You can buy a Claro Peru SIM card right at Lima Airport, but the prices there are excessive. It’s better to look for a store or office of the company.

Once you arrive at your first hotel in Lima and have Wi-Fi access, you can search for the nearest Claro Peru store on Google Maps. In our case, after a short 5-minute walk around the Miraflores area, we found a small Metro supermarket with a Claro Peru counter, as the official Claro Peru office in the area was closed.

In about 10 minutes, a young Peruvian registered my SIM with my passport and, after paying 30 soles for the card and 30 soles for the data package (cheaper than at the official office), provided us with a SIM with internet and a 3GB data package for 30 days.

He handled all the setup, leaving the phone working with internet without any issues. If you want a different data package, there are other options available with various durations and amounts of GB.
