Ten Top Plans If You Are Going to Do the Queensland Pacific Coast Way

Australia’s Queensland Pacific Coast Way is one of those places in the world where there is so much to see and do that it can be overwhelming. That’s why in this article I’m giving you ten essential activities to do on the East Coast of Queensland, so you can save yourself from going around in circles.

Activities are organised from south to north, following the unique Queensland Pacific Coast Way route, from Brisbane to Cairns.

Queensland Pacific Coast Way, are you in?

So, below you will discover what to do on the east coast of Australia: unforgettable plans such as whale watching in Hervey Bay, skydiving over the beach, or an off-road adventure on Fraser Island. Yes, it is without a doubt that the route has plenty to offer…

What to See / Do on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way

1. Moreton Island Day Trip

Moreton Island is a beautiful and versatile island located just 45 minutes by ferry from Brisbane. This tropical island offers so many things to do: kayaking, SUP or cruising on its crystal clear waters are just some of the examples.

But there’s more- on this island on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way, you can also enjoy unique activities like snorkeling around the Tangalooma shipwreck, off-roading on its beaches or, my personal favorite: sandboarding down massive dunes reaching speeds of up to 60 km/ h. A real blast! Definitely a must-do if you’re visiting from Brisbane.

2. Fraser Island Off-Road Adventure

I ask you, what is the best way to explore the largest sand island in the world? Well, if you have been paying attention, you already have the answer… by jeep! Without a doubt, one of my favorite things to do on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way and also one of the most exciting.

This is a unique experience in the world, driving along the 75 Miles Beach (also known as the Fraser Island Highway), discovering unique places such as Lake McKenzies or the Champagne Pools. Yes, of course, the off-road adventure on Fraser Island is a must-see on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way.

3. Whale Watching in Hervey Bay

Talking about what to do on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way and not mentioning whale watching is a crime, because the east coast of Queensland is the ideal place to see whales and dolphins. In fact, it’s as easy as taking a boat from the coast and in just a couple of minutes you’ll find yourself surrounded by these giant cetaceans.

So why is Hervey Bay so special, you might ask? Well, let me tell you: while in other places along Queensland’s east coast you’ll spot whales passing through, in Hervey Bay, they come to rest and play.

And what does this mean? Well, the whales will stop to play with the boat less than 2 meters away! And there’s more… here you can feel the thrill of swimming with whales! Of course, in a responsible way, respecting the animals. Without a doubt, this is a must on your trip to Australia.

4. Getaway to Great Keppel Island

If you thought that paradise islands were only found in Southeast Asia or the Pacific, you were wrong. Great Keppel Island is an Indonesian-style island, with white sand beaches, tropical jungles, crystal-clear waters and coral reefs.

The best part? This island can be explored by cruise, kayak, SUP, and even on foot. There are so many things to do on this island on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way…

Hiking routes to deserted beaches like Wreck Beach, surfing the waters with SUP, and when the heat hits, you can either dive into the water or relax with a cruise from Yeppoon to explore the best snorkeling spots.

5. Sailing Whitsundays Island

And what about the Whitsunday Islands? The blue heart of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef (literally), a group of 74 unrivaled islands. Sailing its waters is a must-do on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way.

I assure you that its calm waters will invite you to swim, its pristine beaches invite you to relax under the murmur of its waves, and its coral reefs will offer you one of the best snorkeling experiences in all of Queensland.

6. Go in a Convertible Around Magnetic Island

Tell me, is there a better way to explore an incredible island than by car? Well, there is… in a convertible. As I told you, on the east coast of Queensland you can do a different activity on every one of its islands… Explore the island in a convertible! And although it may seem like a luxury, it is actually the most comfortable way to explore Magnetic Island.

A very curious and cute island. Here you can easily see koalas sleeping in the trees or small kangaroos (also known as wallabies) on one of the cliffs.

But that’s not all- if you like diving or snorkeling without having to take boats or motorboats, this island offers multi-colored and super-vivid coral reefs directly from the shore.

7. Skydiving Landing On the Beach

Putting the tropical islands aside, let’s head straight for an activity that will skyrocket your adrenaline levels. Yes, I’m talking about skydiving, but not just any kind—skydiving with a beach landing! This is a must-do, without a doubt, if you’re traveling along Australia’s east coast.

Tell me, doesn’t it sound incredible to climb up to 15,000 feet in a small plane, take in the full splendor of the Great Barrier Reef with all its glory, open the doors, and without further warning, leap into that breathtaking view? And the cherry on top- landing on the golden sands of Mission Beach.

Look, here is the link so you don’t have any excuses, hahaha. It has convinced me, what about you?

8. Hike to the Base of Wallaman Fall

Too much time at sea? I imagine you have sand even in your socks by now! Well then, here we go, it’s time to learn about some of the inland plans along the Queensland Pacific Coast Way.

In this case, we venture deep into the ‘Wet Tropics’ rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, until we reach the tallest free-falling waterfall in all of Australia… 267 meters high! I’ll give you a heads-up: getting to the base will be challenging, but the reward? Unbeatable.

Oh, and by the way, if it’s hot, take a dip in its waters. Also, if the descent was difficult, wait until you experience the ascent:)))

9. Diving and Snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef

We can’t talk about what to do on the Queensland Pacific Coast Way without mentioning the Great Barrier Reef. The largest coral reef system in the world, longer than Italy, and a World Heritage Site. A whole world to discover, with Cairns as your gateway.

10. Scenic Route to Cape Tribulation

By now, with all the swimming, hiking, skydiving, and stories, I imagine you’re starting to feel a bit worn out. So, here’s something a little more relaxed for you to enjoy along the Queensland Pacific Coast Way.
