The ruins of Hampi, which were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 for their austerity and grandeur, are located about 300 km from Bangalore in the state of Karnataka. The numerous Dravidian temples of the Vijayanagara Empire made it one of the largest medieval cities of the period after Beijing.
