{"id":10447,"date":"2025-05-13T11:18:35","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T09:18:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/?page_id=10447"},"modified":"2025-05-21T18:52:30","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T16:52:30","slug":"mamallapuram-travel-guide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/mamallapuram-travel-guide\/","title":{"rendered":"Mamallapuram"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We toured the east coast of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/india-travel-guide\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2484\">India<\/a><\/strong> after spending a month in Sri Lanka driving our own tuk-tuk, and the first stop was <strong>Mamallapuram<\/strong>, also known as Mahabalipuram, a coastal town on the Bay of Bengal, in the state of Tamil Nadu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The popularity of this destination, which is evident from the number of accommodations and shops for tourists, is due to a group of more than forty sculptures and temples carved into the rock, all of them <strong>World Heritage Sites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Five Rathas and the Shore Temple are perhaps the most impressive, but Arjuna&#8217;s Penance and Krishna&#8217;s huge Butterball are also worth seeing. They are known for sponsoring great architectural works, sculptures and temples, such as those seen at Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram) today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is said that the Pavalla script was the seed of other current languages \u200b\u200bsuch as Khmer or Burmese. If we come from Chennai or Bangalore, we can enjoy its historical heritage and its beaches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-to-go-to-mamallapuram\">When to go to Mamallapuram<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Mamallapuram is located on the east coast of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/india-travel-guide\/\">India<\/a><\/strong>, in the state of Tamil Nadu. This coastal town experiences all four seasons including a monsoon season. We tell you in detail so you can decide which is the best time to go:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Summer<\/strong> (March to May): During these months, the days are hot and humid, with temperatures around 35-38\u00baC. One option is a combined train to Chennai and then a bus to Mamallapuram. Built between 700 and 728 AD, when we arrived some of its sections were being restored, and it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-shore-temple.jpg\" alt=\"Shore Temple\" class=\"wp-image-12546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-shore-temple.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-shore-temple-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Shore Temple<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Pyramid-shaped and dedicated to the gods Shiva and Vishnu, this temple produced different feelings in us; while it seemed unremarkable to me, Toni found it photogenic, and he entertained himself with every detail, taking photos non-stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading margin-top-0\" id=\"five-rathas\">Five Rathas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The<strong> Five Rathas<\/strong> or Pancha Rathas are a set of sculpted rocks from the 7th century during the reign of Narasimhavarman I that, without being more spectacular than the previous temple, knew how to keep me entertained while filming with the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-cinco-rathas.jpg\" alt=\"Five Rathas\" class=\"wp-image-12544\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-cinco-rathas.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-cinco-rathas-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Five Rathas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Draupadi Ratha, Arjuna Ratha, Bhima Ratha, Dharmaraja Ratha and Nakula-sahadeva Ratha seem to have been inspired by chariots, and were never considered temples, since they were never consecrated, so it is not known exactly why they were built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"arjunas-penance\">Arjuna&#8217;s Penance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arjuna&#8217;s Penance<\/strong>, also called The Descent of the Ganges because it is based on these two stories, is a huge bas-relief about 30 meters long that one finds on the way to the Five Rathas, and depicts fables and semi-divine animals.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-arjuna-penitencia.jpg\" alt=\"Arjuna's Penance\" class=\"wp-image-12547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-arjuna-penitencia.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-arjuna-penitencia-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Arjuna&#8217;s Penance<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is divided by a natural fissure in the rock that forms part of the image, with snakes, nagas, Arjuna doing penance so that Shiva gives him the most powerful weapon, and, of course, beautiful elephants cannot be missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"krishna-butter-ball\">Krishna Butter Ball<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, in a park where there are several Mandapas and the Ganesh Ratha, we will also find the \u201c <strong>Krishna\u2019s Butterball<\/strong> \u201d or Vaan Irai Kal, a huge mysterious rock, approximately 5 meters in diameter and weighing 250 tons, dizzyingly placed on a ramp. Throughout history, numerous rulers have tried to move it without success.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"930\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/mamallapuram-khrishna-bola.jpg\" alt=\"Krishna\u2019s Butterbal\" class=\"wp-image-12543\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Krishna\u2019s Butterbal<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The enormous stone, which seems to have stopped while descending as a result of some spell, is very useful when taking photographs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"thirukadalmallai-temple\">Thirukadalmallai Temple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thirukadalmallai<\/strong> <strong>Temple<\/strong> or Sthalasayana Perumal Temple is a spectacular one, very close to Arjuna&#8217;s Penance, in Dravidian style, and was built during the Pavalla period. It is dedicated to Vishnu and his consort Lakhsmi. The upper part has a seven-tiered stepped tower built in granite during the 15th and 16th centuries.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/Thirukadalmallai-Temple.jpg\" alt=\"Thirukadalmallai Temple\" class=\"wp-image-12545\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/Thirukadalmallai-Temple.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/Thirukadalmallai-Temple-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Thirukadalmallai Temple<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is an important religious center and festivals are also held there where musical instruments are played and daily rituals such as <em>pooja<\/em> are performed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tiger-cave\">Tiger Cave<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Eleven imposing lion heads carved above the entrance to the rock cave give <strong>Tiger Cave<\/strong> its name. This cave, also belonging to the Pavalla period and built in the 8th century, is one of the most interesting in Mamallapuram, and, a few years ago, a new inscription was revealed that led to the discovery of a new find in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/Mamallapuram-tiger-cave.jpg\" alt=\"Tiger Cave\" class=\"wp-image-12548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/Mamallapuram-tiger-cave.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2025\/05\/Mamallapuram-tiger-cave-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tiger Cave<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>It is located a little apart from the rest of the carved rocks, but it is well worth visiting, and, perhaps, imitating the locals, who come here for picnics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"trimurti-cave-temple\">Trimurti Cave Temple<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This small temple carved into a rock shows us the Hindu \u201ctrinity\u201d of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, with the most important sanctuary being dedicated to the latter. <strong>Trimurti Cave<\/strong> is an important example of Pavalla architecture, but it is not clear which ruler built this cave.
