It\u2019s no surprise that the city was declared a <strong>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong> in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-melaka\">Melaka<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like much of Malaysia, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/melaka-travel-guide\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"15191\">Melaka<\/a><\/strong> is a perfect blend of cultures. This small, charming city is just a few hours away by bus from Kuala Lumpur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Historically, due to its strategic location, Melaka was one of the most important trading ports along the Spice Route, fiercely contested by the Portuguese and Dutch.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/melaka.jpg\" alt=\"Melaka\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Melaka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, walking through its historic center, also a <strong>World Heritage Site<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find small restaurants, antique shops, Chinese temples, colonial houses, street art, mosques, and a fort, all reflecting the country&#8217;s remarkable cultural diversity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kuala-terengganu\">Kuala Terengganu<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Kuala Terengganu <\/strong>was founded by Chinese merchants, and it still honors its roots with one of the most ornate and well-preserved Chinatowns in all of Malaysia, known as Kampung China. At times, the vibrant atmosphere made me feel like I was in a carefully crafted theme park.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Terengganu-malasia-01.jpg\" alt=\"Kuala Terengganu\" class=\"wp-image-16224\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kuala Terengganu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the authentic flavors of the dishes served in its local eateries and the countless friendly smiles remind you of the city&#8217;s true essence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-kuching\">Kuching<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spent nearly a week in <strong>Kuching<\/strong>, the capital of the Sarawak province. The city offers a variety of attractions, such as a riverfront promenade, a lively Chinatown, an Indian quarter, and even a cat museum!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/kuching.jpg\" alt=\"Kuching\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kuching<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kuching also serves as a great starting point for exploring nearby sites like <strong>Bako National Park<\/strong> and the <strong>Semenggoh Wildlife Centre<\/strong>, where you might be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a rescued orangutan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-perhentian-islands\">Perhentian Islands<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everyone we met raved about the beaches, the marine life, and the laid-back vibe of the <strong>Perhentian Islands<\/strong>, and it seemed like everyone fell in love with this Malaysian paradise.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/perhentians.jpg\" alt=\"Bienvenidos a las islas Perhentians\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Welcome to Perhentian Islands<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back on our time there, the most memorable aspect for us was the sense of calm: seven days of tranquility filled with reading, jungle walks, and the occasional snorkeling session, which was the most activity we were willing to engage in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tioman\">Tioman<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tioman Island didn\u2019t immediately win us over, perhaps because we arrived late in the season or had just come from the Perhentians and Kapas. However, <strong>Tioman<\/strong>\u2019s true charm revealed itself slowly in the form of wildlife encounters, some even with shells, and a seabed with stunning visibility \u2014 all we needed was a bit of patience.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/pulau-tioman-malasia-12.jpg\" alt=\"Haciendo snorkel\" class=\"wp-image-15927\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Snorkeling in Tioman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our favorite experience was the snorkeling excursion we took, the &#8220;Coral Island Trip,&#8221; which we thoroughly enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-other-beaches\">Other Beaches<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to Malaysia&#8217;s well-known islands, there are many lesser-known and less-frequented islands, both on the peninsula and in Borneo. Some are smaller and others are a bit less accessible, but they are worth exploring if you have a little extra time.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MALASIA-GUIA-KAPAS.jpg\" alt=\"KAPAS\" class=\"wp-image-25604\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kapas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Islands like Pulau Pangkor, Pulau Redang, Seribuat, and the quiet Pulau Kapas offer unique experiences. With an altitude ranging from 1,100 to 1,600 meters, it&#8217;s the perfect destination to escape the stifling heat of the rest of the country, as well as an ideal location for tea plantations.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/CAMERON-HIGHLANDS-15.jpg\" alt=\"Cameron Highlands\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cameron Highlands<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In recent years, the landscape has changed significantly, largely due to the influx of local tourists seeking relief from the high temperatures.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-bako-national-park\">Bako National Park<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bako National Park<\/strong>, with its variety of trails, stunning landscapes, proximity to the sea, and high chances of spotting wildlife, has become a clear favorite for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The park is located in the southern part of Sarawak province, Borneo, and traveling to the island offers the chance to see the famous local proboscis monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/10-cosas-que-seguimos-haciendo-32.jpg\" alt=\"Parque Nacional de Bako\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bako National Park<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We chose to spend a night at the park&#8217;s camp and even had a nocturnal visit from a curious and hungry wild boar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-taman-negara\">Taman Negara<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/taman-negara-the-malaysian-jungle-in-its-purest-form\/\">Taman Negara<\/a> National Park<\/strong> is the oldest tropical rainforest in the world, dating back 130 million years and located in the heart of Peninsular Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MALASIA-GUIA-TAMAN-NEGARA.jpg\" alt=\"TAMAN NEGARA\" class=\"wp-image-25601\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Taman Negara<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although wildlife sightings are rare, the diversity of plant life and the towering trees kept us captivated throughout our two-day adventure. We sailed along the mighty Sungai Tembeling River, experienced the jungle from above on the Canopy Walk, and spent the night in a vast cave filled with bats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-batang-rejang-river\">Batang Rejang River<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cruising along the <strong>Batang Rejang River<\/strong> was one of the most authentic experiences we had during this trip. I say &#8220;in the wild&#8221; with hesitation because the places where I saw them were not as natural as I would have hoped.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/MALASIA-GUIA-ORANGUTANES.jpg\" alt=\"ORANGUTANES\" class=\"wp-image-25596\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Orangutans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the incredible efforts made by the rehabilitation centers we visited, and despite these centers being on our list from the start, I sincerely wish they weren&#8217;t necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uncle-tan\">Uncle Tan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an hour of sailing along the <strong>Kinabatangan River<\/strong>, we arrived at <strong>Uncle Tan&#8217;s camp<\/strong>, where the accommodations were little more than a bed and a mosquito net.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We took several boat trips along the river, spotting various animals like proboscis monkeys and gibbons. The advantage is that now you have, within reach of a click, a lot of hotels and guesthouses that you can choose from before arriving at your destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We recommend platforms like&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/en-en\/city\/kuala-lumpur.html?cid=1620427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"><strong>Booking.com<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agoda.com\/en-en\/city\/kuala-lumpur-my.html?cid=1620427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Agoda.com<\/a><\/strong>, which are very active in Southeast Asian countries like Thailand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-transportation\">Transportation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting around Thailand is quite easy due to the country\u2019s decent infrastructure. For a while now, there have been multiple tools for booking transportation in advance. We recommend&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/12go.asia\/?z=14994\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>12go.asia<\/strong><\/a>, the website we use to book transportation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-currency-and-budget\">Currency and Budget<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Is <strong>Malaysia<\/strong> much more expensive than its neighboring countries? How much can I expect to spend on a daily basis during my backpacking trip? How much does a plate of noodles or rice cost? Most importantly, we will outline approximate costs and prices below to give you an idea when planning your next trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As always, we remind you that this is just a guideline. Some people will spend much less (which is entirely possible), while others might prefer more comfort and spend a bit more.
