Two months may sound like a short period, but it equates to 60 days on the road (over eight weeks), taking us from <strong>Hanoi to the Mekong Delta<\/strong>, through the northwest until reaching Sapa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems like just yesterday that we asked for your help in naming the bike, and now we have quite a few kilometers behind us\u2014<strong>over 3,500<\/strong> to be exact. These miles have been filled with stories and encounters that have given us a unique view of <strong>Vietnam<\/strong> and made our journey unforgettable.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-13819\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ventajas-inconvenientes-ruta-en-moto-vietnam-01.jpg\" alt=\"2 months on a motorcycle through Vietnam!!\" class=\"wp-image-13819\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">2 months on a motorcycle through Vietnam!!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>So, would we do it again?<\/strong> Throughout our trip, we\u2019ve shared both the highlights and some of the low points with you. I\u2019m one of those who always opts for the bad news first, so let\u2019s start with the less pleasant aspects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These are the things that soured our mood a few times or made us have moments of crisis and ask ourselves, \u201cWhy..?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-pain\">The Pain<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The hardest part of traveling by motorbike for us was, without question, the lack of comfort (and our bike was one of the most comfortable we tested). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first couple of hours each day were bliss; you\u2019re enjoying the scenery or fully engaged in navigating around some daredevil bikers. But after about two hours, the pain sets in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve had to take public transportation a few times, and while that\u2019s not always a pleasant experience (like the overcrowded <strong><em>taxi brousse<\/em> in Madagascar<\/strong>), nothing quite compares to the relentless ache in your rear end from constant compression on the bike seat. It\u2019s something we won\u2019t miss!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wonder if seasoned bikers eventually build up some sort of resilience or maybe practice a \u201cno pain\u201d meditation technique. If there\u2019s a secret trick, please share it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"vietnams-traffic\">Vietnam\u2019s Traffic<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, the bustling, motorbike-filled streets and roads you\u2019ve heard about really do define the country. I\u2019m convinced that there\u2019s nearly one motorbike per person here; otherwise, such numbers would be inexplicable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then there\u2019s the chaos of driving here. You\u2019ll encounter motorcyclists darting onto the road from paths you can\u2019t see until you\u2019re two meters away (without checking, of course, and often loaded to the brim with all sorts of goods). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are also buses and trucks that barrel down the road as though they\u2019re the only vehicles out there, and school kids on bikes who appear out of nowhere, riding two or three abreast and taking up half the road.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-13825\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ventajas-inconvenientes-ruta-en-moto-vietnam-02.jpg\" alt=\"Motorcycle hornet's nest in Ho Chi Minh City\" class=\"wp-image-13825\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Motorcycle hornet&#8217;s nest in Ho Chi Minh City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>And then there are the animals, blissfully unaware of traffic dangers. Dogs sleep in the middle of the road, oblivious to the blaring horns. Cows cross wherever they please, and suicidal chickens dart right under your bike (and somehow come out unscathed\u2014ask us how we know!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A complete obstacle course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your motorbike experience is limited to commuting between home and work, you\u2019ll need to level up before tackling the roads in Vietnam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inclement-weather\">Inclement Weather<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019re not sure why Vietnam\u2019s weather is so unpredictable, but over 60 days, we experienced what felt like all four seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We began with a rainy autumn in the country\u2019s northwest, forcing us to buy all kinds of waterproof gear. Soon, as the fog rolled in, it turned into a cold winter in Sapa.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-13824\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ventajas-inconvenientes-ruta-en-moto-vietnam-03.jpg\" alt=\"Cold + rain + fog = ?\" class=\"wp-image-13824\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cold + rain + fog = ?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>After stocking up on clothes to combat the chill, temperatures gradually warmed as we headed south, allowing us to enjoy a brief spring before being hit by the scorching summer in Ho Chi Minh and the <strong>Mekong Delta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"repairs-and-maintenance\">Repairs and Maintenance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The bike needs constant attention: oil changes, part replacements, and inevitable flat tires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst scenario? Having this happen in the one area in Vietnam where the nearest mechanic is over 10 kilometers away. You might end up being towed by a kind stranger who, pitying you as you push your bike under the 30-degree heat, stops to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, this happened to us.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-13823\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ventajas-inconvenientes-ruta-en-moto-vietnam-04.jpg\" alt=\"Regular maintenance of our Km0\" class=\"wp-image-13823\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Regular maintenance of our Km0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>But if your luck is not so dire, Vietnamese mechanics are like guardian angels\u2014you\u2019ll find them everywhere. Every few meters, you\u2019ll spot a sign reading \u201cS\u1eeda Xe M\u00e1y\u201d and busy mechanics surrounded by clouds of spare parts, repairing motorbikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"advantages\">Advantages<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"freedom\">Freedom<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the main reason we decided to travel by motorbike: the freedom to choose, at any moment, what to do and where to go, bound only by the occasional whims of the bike we\u2019ve just mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Schedules<\/strong>: Starting each day whenever we wanted, without relying on bus or train timetables. To be honest, this can be a double-edged sword if, like us, you\u2019re not early risers, it\u2019s mostly been a huge relief. We\u2019ve also avoided trips to stations to check schedules, waiting in lines to buy tickets, or dealing with extra fees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Stops<\/strong>: Having the freedom to stop anywhere to enjoy the beautiful scenery or take photos at our leisure, stopping for food or coffee whenever we felt like it rather than on the bus driver\u2019s schedule. One of our favorite parts of the trip has been enjoying roadside coffees, which are far better than any we found in restaurants.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Choosing a Destination<\/strong>: Smaller, off-the-beaten-path towns are much easier to access with your own transport. Along with these, we encountered people who defied everything we\u2019d read about Vietnamese locals.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-13821\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ventajas-inconvenientes-ruta-en-moto-vietnam-06.jpg\" alt=\"Total complicity with the people\" class=\"wp-image-13821\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Total complicity with the people<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In two months of travel, I can only recall a couple of instances where someone tried to take advantage of us. In most of the lesser-known places we visited, the Vietnamese people welcomed us with kindness and curiosity, without making us feel like walking dollar signs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-13820\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ventajas-inconvenientes-ruta-en-moto-vietnam-07.jpg\" alt=\"They even pose for the photo ;-)\" class=\"wp-image-13820\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">They even pose for the photo \ud83d\ude09<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"experience\">Experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And I\u2019m not just referring to the experience Toni has now gained as a motorcyclist, which I think could be worth a master&#8217;s degree in riding after navigating Vietnam. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also about the experience we\u2019re taking with us\u2014each excursion, each conversation in gestures with people who don\u2019t speak a word of English, and each memory that would undoubtedly have been different without Km0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"conclusion\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though the first list had twice as many negative points, the three words on the second list\u2014authenticity, freedom, and experience\u2014undoubtedly carry more weight. At least, that\u2019s how it was for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, we might need a few weeks before seeing a motorbike again, but yes, we would do it all over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would you be willing to go through the \u201chardships\u201d to enjoy the rewards? We guess that depends on how each person values their freedom.
