This is an intense excursion, and due to the distance between each destination, you\u2019ll spend many hours on the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you&#8217;re just passing through the north briefly, we think it\u2019s better to focus on <strong>Chiang Mai<\/strong> and its surroundings and enjoy them. Don\u2019t worry if you haven\u2019t had time for breakfast; the first stop at the hot springs is about an hour away.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-21887\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/chiang-rai-day-trip-01-hotsprings.jpg\" alt=\"Hot springs\" class=\"wp-image-21887\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hot springs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201ccool\u201d thing about this stop is that there are a couple of natural hot springs where, aside from the strong sulfur smell, you can boil and eat an egg right on the spot. You can also grab a bite to eat or drink from nearby coffee stands or convenience stores like 7-Eleven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-white-temple-or-wat-rong-khun\">The White Temple, or Wat Rong Khun<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without a doubt, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wat-rong-khun-white-temple-chiang-rai\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13888\">Thailand\u2019s famous White Temple<\/a><\/strong> in Chiang Rai is one of the most unique in the entire country. Its most striking feature is that, unlike most temples in Thailand, it\u2019s completely painted in white\u2014except for the restroom area, whose gold-plated walls could make you think you\u2019ve entered royal bathrooms.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-21884\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/chiang-rai-day-trip-05-templo-blanco-Wat-Rong-Khun.jpg\" alt=\"Wat Ron Khun\" class=\"wp-image-21884\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wat Ron Khun<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its modern style, superhero imagery, and the fact that the artist, Chalermchai Kositpipat, continues painting its interior make Wat Rong Khun especially popular with tourists\u2014as shown by the crowds. In our case, it was a buffet, included in the price of the tour. Since most activities organized by different agencies are practically identical, it\u2019s likely this is standard. Still, it\u2019s worth confirming with the agency when booking.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-21892\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/chiang-rai-day-trip-25-templo-blanco-northest-point-1.jpg\" alt=\"Northernmost point of Thailand\" class=\"wp-image-21892\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Northernmost point of Thailand<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But before lunch, we made a quick stop at Thailand\u2019s northernmost point, right on the border with <strong>Myanmar<\/strong>. Besides snapping a classic photo and watching the hustle and bustle of the border crossing\u2014people going back and forth\u2014you can browse local markets selling jewelry, stones, and nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-golden-triangle\">The Golden Triangle<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Golden Triangle is the name given to the place where the Ruak and Mekong Rivers form a natural border at the meeting point of <strong>Thailand<\/strong>, <strong>Laos<\/strong>, and <strong>Myanmar<\/strong>. The area was once infamous for opium cultivation, but today, tourists mainly come to snap a photo at the border or spend a little time in Laos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you join a tour, chances are they&#8217;ll give you the option to cross over to the Laotian side\u2014though this usually comes with an extra fee, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-21898\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/chiang-rai-day-trip-31-templo-blanco-golden-triangle.jpg\" alt=\"The Golden Triangle\" class=\"wp-image-21898\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Golden Triangle<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Thai side of the Golden Triangle, there\u2019s not much to do apart from grabbing a bite at one of the caf\u00e9s or browsing for souvenirs. Ask first\u2014so you don\u2019t end up supporting something you\u2019re uncomfortable with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"do-we-recommend-this-tour\">Do We Recommend This Tour?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, as we mentioned earlier, if you&#8217;re short on time, we don\u2019t think spending it in a minivan is the best use of it. Chiang Mai has a lot to offer, and you can enjoy it more without rushing to see a tiny glimpse of the surrounding provinces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We did this tour once when friends were visiting and thought it would be a good chance to show them the White Temple. But if I had to plan that trip again, I\u2019d swap this excursion for something closer to Chiang Mai. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of the 12 hours the tour lasted, I\u2019d say we spent around nine of them inside the vehicle\u2014just so you\u2019re aware\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another thing (and this might sound a bit odd, but it\u2019s my personal opinion) is the strange feeling I was left with after listening to our guide all day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was something unsettling about how coldly she spoke about the different ethnic groups, or the way she encouraged people to try liquor infused with tiger testicles once we crossed into Laos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her tone carried a sense of indifference about the things she was showing us, which left me with a bitter impression.
