The golden rule is to drive <strong>within two hours of low tide (either before or after)<\/strong>. Ideally, aim to drive as close to low tide as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Because <strong>during high tide, parts of the beach become inaccessible<\/strong>, and you&#8217;ll be forced onto soft sand\u2014making it much easier to get stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend planning your route around the tide chart. Try using the <strong>Tides AU<\/strong> app or visit the Rainbow Beach information center to grab a printed tide schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lower-your-tire-pressure\">Lower Your Tire Pressure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Lowering your tire pressure <strong>improves traction on sand<\/strong>\u2014simple as that. Do this before driving on Fraser Island.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To find the correct pressure, check your vehicle\u2019s 4&#215;4 manual. In our case, we went from 40 psi down to 18 psi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"engage-4-4-at-all-times\">Engage 4\u00d74 at All Times<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most modern 4WDs don\u2019t engage 4&#215;4 automatically\u2014you have to switch it on manually. A common mistake is forgetting to do this before hitting the beach, which often leads to getting stuck in soft sand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avoid that hassle: activate 4WD before entering the sand and keep it on throughout your journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"obey-road-rules\">Obey Road Rules<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though beach driving might feel like a wild adventure, Fraser Island\u2019s beaches are legally classified as highways. This can quickly get you stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"watch-out-for-wildlife-and-pedestrians\">Watch Out for Wildlife and Pedestrians<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Fraser Island&#8217;s beaches are legally highways, they\u2019re shared spaces. But don\u2019t panic\u2014just follow these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stop accelerating immediately<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shift into reverse, keep the wheels straight, and try to back up slightly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shift to first gear and move forward a little, following the same path<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat steps 2 and 3 to create momentum and wiggle free<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If that doesn\u2019t work:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check your tire pressure again and reduce it further if needed (check your 4&#215;4 owner&#8217;s manual for the correct tire pressure)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use a shovel to clear sand around the wheels. Sometimes it can get so stuck that the wheels no longer have traction.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Place recovery tracks under the tires and drive out using the traction boost<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly: <strong>stay calm. Don\u2019t spin the wheels or accelerate aggressively, it will only dig you deeper<\/strong>.
