Almost in the blink of an eye the monsoon season sets in across Thailand in early May, eagerly awaited by locals, since it gives some relief from the scorching heat of April, but annoying for tourists…

Don’t give up hope, though, because the rainy season in Thailand doesn’t mean only gray days, rather it means clouds that gather suddenly, usually in the afternoon or overnight, bringing a deluge of warm rain of relatively short duration, which then disappears just as quickly.

Rain has little effect on the prevailing heat, and it does not necessarily rain every day (the frequency and duration depends largely on the region you are in), and it is not too intense during May, which is the beginning of the season.

When it’s not raining, the sun is bright and warm, and there are advantages for taking a trip to Thailand in the rainy season: the tourist areas are less crowded and also cheaper.

Visiting Thailand in May is a bit of a gamble when it comes to the amount of sunshine you get, but if you don’t mind getting soaked by the rain, you can still go home with a nice tan.
