Have you ever been offered to have your photo taken with a macaque or a gibbon? If you want your vacation to be free of abuse, there are two things you have to be very clear about before attending any activity with animals:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That if there is abuse, most of the time it will not happen right under our noses, because the owners are smart enough (or not) not to scare away their clientele, for example by letting an elephant be hit with the hook while we ride it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The definition of animal abuse involves much more than just physical abuse. Captivity and deprivation of freedom, starving or thirsty animals, not allowing them to express their natural behavior, mutilating them (removing their nails or teeth), or causing them stress by forcing them to perform activities against their nature, are practices that are just as cruel as aggression.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-information-about-the-center-i-want-to-visit\">Information About the Center I Want to Visit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you have understood the concept, the next step is to find out about the center you want to visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many good options where, in addition to being able to enjoy the local fauna, you will be contributing to a good cause, such as sanctuaries and rescue centers, but you have to bear in mind that some are not transparent or sincere with their intentions, as their only objective is to enrich themselves at the expense of the poor animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A clue: in rescue or recovery centers what will not be lacking is information about where each animal comes from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-where-do-i-look-for-information\">Where do I Look for Information?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I talk about information, <strong>I&#8217;m not referring to comments from people on forums or tripadvisor<\/strong>, as most of them probably don&#8217;t even know the meaning of the word \u201cstereotype\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, <strong>how can someone who doesn&#8217;t understand animal behavior<\/strong> or whose experience with felines is having a cat in their house or their neighbor&#8217;s <strong>be sure whether a tiger is drugged or not<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What&#8217;s more, why do we insist on only wanting to know if animals are under the influence of narcotics in order to establish a moral limit and decide whether it is ethical or not to visit these centers? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If drugs are not used, how do you think a wild animal or one with a predatory instinct can be made submissive? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Have you stopped to think about where the animals come from or where they end up when they are no longer useful? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How are they bred? Do you know that behind some of these activities there is a whole network of animal trafficking?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When considering whether to go to a place or not, <strong>we should ask ourselves many more questions than the typical ones<\/strong>, and not trust any type of information. As I have already said, animal abuse involves many more things than we think, and most of the time it is not as obvious as one believes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have you ever stopped to think whether the simple fact of spending several hours a day posing for photos with tourists can cause stress in these animals? Stress lowers their defenses and makes them susceptible to all kinds of diseases.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Is it ethical for them to live in captivity for our use and enjoyment?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And to those of you who believe that you are contributing to a good cause, do you believe that a practically domesticated animal will be able to live in freedom?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Do you think contact with animals is allowed in recovery centers?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to FAADA, &#8220;in the case of animals that have close contact with humans (\u2026as is the case of the temple tigers) being released is potentially fatal for the tigers, humans and livestock.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-11373 size-full\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"933\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/10\/animal-abuse.jpg\" alt=\"Another animal abuse\" class=\"wp-image-3466\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/10\/animal-abuse.jpg 1400w, https:\/\/www.conmochila.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2024\/10\/animal-abuse-700x467.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Another animal abuse<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luckily, society evolves, and today, through the Internet, it is much easier to access information and learn the reality behind certain businesses (sometimes not so much behind, but right under our noses, and we don&#8217;t know\/want to see it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-but-i-insist-where-to-look-for-information\">But I insist, where to look for information?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Travel blogs are fine, but they are totally subjective, like ours, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are experienced travelers who still believe that by paying a few baht they are freeing a bird, there are popular forum moderators who question the fact that an elephant is not strong enough to carry chairs and tourists, and others who continue to take photos with animals without even knowing that they are contributing to illegal wildlife trafficking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are even those who, trying to justify their presence in such places, say that &#8220;the animals were well cared for,&#8221; but I come back to the same thing: why are they docile? What happens when the tourist is not around? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do you really think that the owners of these tourist traps are going to mistreat the animal in front of us?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-so-what-should-i-do\">So What should I Do?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m not going to be the one to answer all of these questions, mainly because I haven&#8217;t been to or know all of the attractions with animals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My purpose in this post is another: to make you question things and read before going to these places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you love animals, you will avoid some unpleasant surprises, and if you don&#8217;t love them, do it out of compassion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many people who prefer to go and form their own ideas, and, when they leave and realize that it is all a business, they are left with a bad taste in their mouths, having contributed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us remember that as long as there are people who go, these places will continue to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I would like to suggest a few critical pages with animal shows\/activities whose only interest is to ensure that their rights are respected, and <strong>where we can get information<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To read nice comments like \u201chow cute the little elephants are\u201d or \u201cwhere is the best place to see tigers in Chiang Mai or Kanchanaburi\u201d you can go to tripadvisor, the travelers forum and other blogs\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-general-links-to-avoid-falling-into-tourist-traps\">GENERAL links to avoid falling into tourist traps<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/turismo-responsable.com\/en\/s5-tourism-and-animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Responsible Tourism<\/a><\/strong>: This website of the FAADA Foundation contains comprehensive and valuable information in Spanish about tourism and animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here you can learn about the cruel reality behind activities that use all kinds of species: bears, dolphins, parrots, elephants, tigers&#8230; and you can also keep up to date by reading the articles on their blog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/elpais.com\/elpais\/2016\/02\/03\/planeta_futuro\/1454496581_404687.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Responsible Wildlife Tourist Guide<\/a><\/strong>: We are glad that the media with the most impact are beginning to give the issue the importance it deserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to this article in <em>El Pa\u00eds<\/em>, \u201cInteraction with endangered species can contribute to their mistreatment. Or just the opposite. Different experts analyze controversial cases from Asia to give clues to travelers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel4wildlife.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Travel4wildlife<\/a><\/strong>: Hal and Cristina have two passions, travel and wildlife, and in their <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.travel4wildlife.com\/responsible-travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Responsible Travel<\/a><\/strong> section they collect a series of very interesting articles that promote conservation through responsible tourism. Through their article, they invite us to learn what is behind certain tourist activities that use animals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-links-about-tigers\">Links About TIGERS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To the people who ask me about the tiger centers in Thailand: <strong>I have NOT been there and I do not plan to go, because I have a very clear opinion about them<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are many people who go and have a great time (yes, and there are also those who enjoy bullfighting, dog fighting or cockfighting\u2026 because they have no empathy and are not capable of seeing suffering when it is not their own), and others who leave these centers very sad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I find it funnier when selfish people try to justify themselves with \u201cit&#8217;s the only way to stay in touch with them\u201d despite not being happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one I like the most is the one that says \u201cwithout these centers, tigers would have become extinct\u201d, but just a quick look at the websites of these centers is enough to realize that the only thing that matters to them is business: there you can find all the prices depending on what size animal you want to take a photo with. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In no section will you find individual information about the tigers, or where they come from. To make matters worse, the Tiger Temple offers, for 1000 baht more, an elephant ride\u2026 (I won\u2019t comment on that).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For me, <strong>it is not an ethical option<\/strong> to enter a cage to take a photo with a wild animal that lives in captivity and also has to put up with dozens of people taking photos with them every day, with the stress that this entails for the tigers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Are you really <strong>only worried about whether they are drugged or not<\/strong>? Let&#8217;s leave the &#8221; environmental enrichment**&#8221; in quotes, because I only see people giving tigers a hard time, and those would surely prefer to be lying down resting anywhere in freedom&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.onegreenplanet.org\/animalsandnature\/exposed-thailands-tiger-kingdom-sanctuary-or-sham\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">One Green Planet<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s website explains why Tiger Kingdom is not, as it calls itself, a sanctuary or a rescue center.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-links-about-elephants\">Links about ELEPHANTS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As I wrote in the blog, elephants, although they may seem very strong, can <strong>only easily carry 100 kg on their backs<\/strong>. The chairs used for rides weigh 50 kg, plus the weight of two tourists, so it is already over the limit. In addition, the domestication process is extremely cruel. Animals that were once used for logging and when it was banned were left without work.
